Reasons To Have Your IT Support Staff Set Up Employee Accounts

One of the best things about getting an IT support person working for your company is that he or she can perform a long list of tasks that will benefit you and your staff in a multitude of ways. One task that you might wish to assign to your IT support person is setting up accounts for newly hired employees. The specific types of accounts that your employees need depend on the type of business that you operate, and while it might be tempting to leave them instructions to do this work themselves — likely on their first day — you should think strongly about assigning this task to your IT service professional. Here are some reasons that doing so is advantageous.

It Will Get Done Faster

There's no question that having your IT support person set up each of your new employees' accounts will have the job completed faster. IT professionals can input this information and establish the account in minutes, if not quicker. Conversely, a new employee — especially if he or she isn't working for your company in a technical capacity — will almost certainly take longer to complete this task. You don't want new employees wasting their time, even on the first day. Using your IT support person for this job avoids time being wasted.

There Will Be More Accuracy

The last thing that you need is for a new employee to attempt to set up his or her employee account, but do so incorrectly. This can lead to confusion and wasted time in the future. For example, if the employee doesn't give himself or herself the proper permissions, he or she may be unable to access needed files on a shared network drive. This will require the employee to log an IT help desk query for something that would've been avoided had your IT professional done the job in the first place.

New Employees Should Have Other Priorities

As a business owner, you want your new employees to get up to speed as quickly as possible. This often means providing vigorous training to them so that they can begin to contribute in their specified roles before too much time has passed. Don't overwhelm your new employees by giving them a technical assignment of this nature. They have other things on which to focus — namely, meeting their new colleagues and getting acquainted with their jobs — when they start to work for you, rather than setting up their accounts.
